Album Anniversary – Crosby, Stills & Nash

Album Anniversaries

Album:Crosby, Stills & Nash

Band: Crosby, Stills & Nash

Release Date: May 29, 1969

Folk supergroup Crosby, Stills & Nash released their self-titled debut album on this day in 1969 off of Atlantic Records.  The group features David Crosby (singer/guitarist for The Byrds), Stephen Stills (guitarist/singer for Buffalo Springfield), and Graham Nash (guitarist/singer for The Hollies).  After the release of their debut album, the band would add Neil Young, an excellent and diverse musician, to alternate between keyboards and guitar with Stills and Nash at concerts.

The album received great reviews with Rolling Stone giving it 4/5 stars and AllMusic giving it 5/5 stars.  Jason Akeny of AllMusic states, “the harmonies are absolutely timeless, and the best material remains rock-solid”.

The album cover features Nash, Stills, & Crosby from left to right, which coincidentally is the reverse order of the band’s name.  But, when the picture was taken the group had not decided on a name yet.  The three are sitting on an old couch in front of an abandoned house in West Hollywood.  After the band had decided on a name, they went back to the house to reshoot the picture in the correct order but found out the house had been knocked down.  The group won the award for Best New Artist at the 1970 Grammy Awards after performing a legendary set at Woodstock in August 1969.
